History of Lawjynriew

Lawjynriew Formation

The name Lawjynriew is believed to have been derived from the creeping plant known as “Jynriew”, which once grew abundantly in the forested areas of Rngi Jynriew Rum. According to the Topographical Map of 1940–41, a stream called Umjynriew flows alongside Wah Demthring towards the Nongthymmai area. This stream has played an important role in supplying water to the residents of Lawjynriew and nearby areas.

Because of its location below the foothills of Lum Shyllong and its accessibility to the National Highway, the area gradually attracted settlers from outside the locality. One of the most notable developments was the establishment of the palatial residence of the Maharajah of Mayurbhanj at Lumbasuk locality, formerly known as Margaret Ville. This estate later housed departments of North Eastern Hill University, and subsequently became the site of the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. At present, the National Law University Meghalaya is also located in the area.
